New MP3 from Thee More Shallows

Thee More Shallows have never lacked a respectable sense of texture. Instead of settling for simple instrumentation, they’ve always busted out a toy piano, strings, found sounds, and other musical detrius to keep things interesting. Now that the band is recording for neighboring Bay Area label, Anticon, their extracurricular sounds and noises have grown darker and grittier and damn it sounds nice. “Book of Bad Breaks” will be available April 24th.

Play It As It Lays #254

I haven’t shared my playlist for a few weeks, mostly because I’ve been fighting off a terrorist of a cold and have missed a couple shows, and the other ones just weren’t up to par. I love the new +/- and I dusted off an old Three O’Clock record that still sounds great 21 years later! Enjoy the show.

New MP3 + Album from Dosh

The Lost Take, Dosh’s third album is due out October 17th through Anticon. From the sounds of the first listen music fans are in for a treat. On “Um, Circles and Squares” Martin Dosh collaborates with Andrew Bird on violin and Mike Lewis from Fog on saxophone, cutting and looping their performances with his signature rhythm, live drums and bass-synth sequencing, underneath. The synth work reminds me of a sound four lads from Basildon, England conjured up twenty-five years ago, updated with live, organic instrumentation.

This week’s show was a little more rock heavy than usual. It didn’t really strike me as such until some listeners pointed it out to me. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a freeform show. I like to keep things interesting. Lots of great tracks this week. The new Dirty On Purpose is amazing as is Asobi Seksu, Matmos, and Sky Parade.

The playlist from last night’s show. Highlight: Futura 2000 & The Clash. News to me–back in ’83 graffiti artist Futura 2000 rhymed his way through his “tag-ography” over a dub groove by The Clash. The track is included on a new compilation Celluloid Years: 12″es and More. Wanna hear the show? Email me for the link.

This show started off with a bang! A great new track from the Australian funk band The Bamboos… If you’re listening at work, beware of that Mylo track: plenty of choice words your boss may frown on.
