Sally Crewe and the Sudden Moves

Anyone remember The Housemartins? Musically, Sally Crewe and the Sudden Moves are the various children they left scattered across England in the hedonistic ’80s, united to resurrect the pleasantly pointless pop of their parents. Nothing too complex here, just cleanly written songs with straightforward guitar hooks and smooth backing vocals, mostly about cars (and most songs barely making it past two minutes).

  1. I have to object to the Housemartins' music being proclaimed "pointless." There's a lot of dark sarcasm and social commentary hidden under the surface of their sweet sounds.

  2. No doubt you are correct. Sorry. I must have missed it when I was 14 or 15 and playing their cassette until I lost it.

  3. The Housemartins specialized in acerbic (and often leftist) social/political commentary. If I recall correctly, though, singer P. Heaton later admitted it was all pretty much a put on. Still, as Scott suggested, they shouldn’t be dismissed so quickly.
BTW: This is my first post here. Excellent site.

  4. i never bothered to dig too deep for the social commentary either! (ok, i did get johannesburg, i think) The music was too darn catchy, and i knew it was supposed to be slightly subversive on the lyrics side, so i ate it up. it's happy hour again!!!!!
