Hotel Lights

Darren Jesse, ex-Ben Folds Five drummer, is the brainchild behind Hotel Lights. This is no solo project however. I imagine after being one of the nameless two-thirds in Ben Folds Five Jessee soured on the solo-type thing. That’s pure speculation on my part. He’s put together an impressive band featuring Mark Price (Archers of Loaf drummer) and Alan Weatherhead (a once-member of Sparklehorse) as producer and guitarist. Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne had his hand in a few tracks as well. The pedigree should get your attention, but the product will hold it. This is the kind of music I’ll never burn out on: richly-textured, finely-crafted pop songs that play effortlessly and smooth.

  1. I'm very impressed with this one. It's a very professional and competent sound. While it still smacks of the high-pitched whiny boy-vocalist that has permeated much of the current indie music, this at least does so with a 70's flair that makes it come across a bit more mature.

  2. When I first heard of Hotel Lights I was excited, expecting something with songs like Magic and Amelia Bright and similar sound to the stuff he played with Folds and Sledge. Nope, not even close. It is something all together different. But in a very good way. I've had the CD for over a year and still listen to it all the time. It literally never grows old, and their new EP is even better. So yeah, kick ass music.
