Stephen Duffy & the Lilac Time

In my teenage years I listened to everything from T.S.O.L. to the likes of Mr. Duffy here, recording at the time as Tin Tin. Stephen Duffy was the instructions, the map, and the soundtrack to getting the girl, while T.S.O.L. et al provided the musical score after I’d been dumped, refused, or otherwise unable to, um, score. Alright, let’s be honest. I never came close. Fast forward a number of years and Duffy has matured from British dance pop to stripped-down, acoustic folk songs, without much change in theme. He’s still trying to figure out exactly how love works. Join the club.

Shots Fired

Ask Sam, my fellow 3hiver, just how utterly amazing the Seaweed/Quicksand show was back about ten years ago at the old Club DV8 in Salt Lake City. It changed our lives. I’d venture to say 3hive wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for that concert. At the risk of exposing ourselves as the complete geeks we are, I’ll admit we were screaming every word of every song at the top of our lungs, working our air guitars as if possessed by a locomotive. Shots Fired, this Kansas City trio, would have made a perfect opener for that night. Check the chorus in “Squires @ Bristol.” I just about keeled over from a brain aneurysm rocking out to that guitar riff. But wait! It only plays through once!?! AAAAAAAA! Rewrite! Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Chorus, CHORUS!!

StafrÊnn H·kon

The moment I mention StafrÊnn H·kon resides and records in Iceland, one or more of the following artists will come to mind: Bj–rk, Sigur RÛs, M™m. Once you hear his music, references to the former artists would be redundant, however the music itself is anything but: drum loops and percussion awash in introspective guitars and the tempo, just above the speed at which ice melts in Iceland.

Giant Drag

Just out of high school I fell in love with a girl named Annie. We went to the same school, but never met until it was all over and we were off to college. A fleeting relationship. Well I just fell in love with another Annie. At least the music she makes. Annie’s guitars sound all warm and fuzzy, her voice soft and soothing, even when she’s singing heartbreaking songs to me. And she too has been right here all along, close, in my backyard. I long for the great times we could’ve had if only I’d met her a little sooner.

Spaghetti Western

Sometimes melancholic, sometimes dimly hopeful compositions perfect for drives through the Mojave at dusk. The suggestion comes with a warning: Spaghetti Western may induce hallucinations of a Parisian circus circa 1890, slow-mo, black and white, flashbacks to a dizzy meal at La Mela in Little Italy, or of rainy Sunday mornings in a dark bedroom, illuminated by a PowerBook G4, eating Hershey’s Kisses, keying MP3 reviews into Movable Type.

Arco

I find myself holding my breath, waiting, riveted, for each word uttered by Chris Healey. His is a still, small, wavering voice accompanied by a stripped-down band. Comparisons from Nick Drake to Radiohead all fit the bill here. But Arco is even more fragile than Drake, more quiet than the quietest moments from Yorke and company, and absolutely stunning.

Love of Everything

Here’s some off-the-cuff, discordant pop, indebted to the likes of Daniel Johnston. Bobby Burg, recording as Love of Everything, writes and records music with the same healthy disrespect for the songwriting and recording process. Instead of striving for perfection, getting lost in the details, he seemingly gets his ideas and emotions out quick, without much thought. You may be tempted to write Burg off with just an obligatory listen, but with time you discover this boy’s got soul.

Kelley Stoltz

I’m a sucker for bedroom recordings and Kelley Stoltz has certainly raised my lo-fi expectations. Unable to settle with any one sound, Stoltz wanders from spaced-out, folk songs, to downtempo Nick Drake moments, to Theremin-tinged psychedelia. Add to this his solo interpretations of classic Echo & The Bunnymen songs and it’s as plain as the nose on your face that you’ve been missing something. This may be your first taste of Kelley Stoltz, but I’d wager it ain’t your last.

Jon Sheffield

I’m kicking myself that I’m just discovering Sheffield, who’s already four albums deep into his recording career. His is quiet, playful electronic music wrapped in small pop-size packages. Sheffield frequently samples his son, Gabriel, which gives his music a sweet, innocent texture. There’s a quality here that rings my holiday bells as well. When I hear these songs I see snow. And when I see snow, I’m inevitably carving deep tracks into the freshly fallen. Which begs the question, when’s the 3hive snowboarding excursion going down?
