Brooklyn garage rock trio, Sharkmuffin, punch you straight in the mouth from the needle drop and don’t let up on their excellent debut LP Chartreuse. Sharkmuffin is made up of Tarra Thiessen (vocals/guitar), Natalie Kirch (vocals/bass) and Janet LaBelle (vocals/drums), however Patty Schemel (of Hole fame) played drums on the album while LaBelle was recovering from an injury.

Give the pummeling title-track, “Chartreuse”, a spin (below), it’s a great sample of what do expect from the rest of the LP. Chartreuse is out now on cassette and vinyl from Little Dickman Records and State Capitol Records. Enjoy.

Atlanta powerhouse trio, Omni, throw it down on their hook-filled, power-pop release Deluxe. The chugging bass, angular guitar and frantic backbeat of opener “Afterlife” (below) not only make it one of the best songs on the album, but one of my favorite songs so far this year.

Deluxe is out now through Trouble In Mind Records. It’s one of my favorite records so far this year and a great one to crank up and pogo around the house to. Enjoy

Yea-Ming And The Rumours | I Will Make You Mine | 3hive.com

Yea-Ming And The Rumours debut album, I Will Make You Mine, is an exceptional 33 minutes of indie-surf-country-pop-rock. Yea-Ming Chen’s smokey voice is a killer, and really matches up well with all the different genres she and her band, The Rumours, throw at these 10 songs. Give the country-like, album standout “You Took Be By The Hand” (below) a spin, you will not be disappointed.

I Will Make You Mine is available now on cassette from Burger Records and also available digitally from Yea-Ming And The Rumours Bandcamp page.

Knife The Symphony

Knife The Symphony | Split 12" | 3hive.com

Cincinnati, Ohio’s Knife The Symphony have been destroying speakers for the better part of 10 years. They’ve performed with Mission of Burma, 7 Seconds, The Bomb and many others. They have several releases under their belts, including their newest split 12 incher with Smoke Signals….

KTS’ drummer/vocalist, Jerry Dirr, also runs Phratry Records and has been putting out releases from bands like Swear Jar, A.M. Nice and Kelley Deal since 2004.

KTS’ newest release is the aforementioned, 12″ split, with Smoke Signals…. KTS’ three song contribution are blistering, punk/noise rock blasts that are sure to get any fan of Drive Like Jehu to take notice. They also remind me a lot of the, now defunct, SLC band Form of Rocket. Check out the face-melting opener, “Causation” (below), for a taste. You will like it.

The Knife The Symphony/Smoke Signals… split 12″ is available now in most formats from KTS’ Bandcamp page. Enjoy.

Tucson, AZ’s Sea Wren is the side project of Cherish Rendon, who also plays for the fabulous psych-pop band, The Resonars. As Sea Wren, Cherish writes, sings and plays all guitars on all songs, with fellow Resonar, Matt Rendon, on the drums.

Her self-titled debut is out now on cassette through Lolipop Records and digitally available from Sea Wren’s Bandcamp page. It’s a jangly, garage-pop gem that you will find yourself playing over and over again. Give the standout track, “Birds of Slumber” (below) a spin to see what I mean.

Cedar Spring Motel are a snotty, heavy, in your face punk rock trio out of Hamilton, Ontario. They describe their music as “… the feeling you get on your teeth when you forget to brush them.” How do I top that?

Give their spazztic, Refused-esque, scorcher “Smoke Break” a spin below – it’s a neck breaker.  Cedar Spring Motel’s debut self-titled EP is out now and available on 7 inch vinyl or digitally from their Bandcamp page. Get it!

Will Courtney | Planning Escapes | 3hive.com

There is nothing better than music to take you away to other times, whether they be good times or bad. Courtney’s voice always takes me back to when my kids were little, when his other band, Brothers And Sisters, were on constant rotation in the house and in the car. Good times.

Now, 10 years later, Will is releasing his sophomore solo effort, Planning Escapes, which was recorded in Texas with his backing band, The Wild Bunch, which features members of Brothers And Sisters.

Planning Escapes has a little bit of everything in it’s 10 songs, from down-tempo country ballads to straight-up rock ‘n’ roll. Give the Neil Young-esque “Sad, Sad Eyes” a spin below, you won’t regret it.

Planning Escapes is solid from start to finish, I highly recommend it. Get your hands on it now from Will Courtney’s site.

Album opener ‘A Love Song” (below) is packed with bright tones and throbbing synths – a real pop gem that’s sure to get a dance party started, even if it’s only a dance party for one.

Wild Things is out now and available from Polyvinyl Records. Check it out.
