Blktop Project

I’ve been a fan of Tommy Guerrero since I was 13 years old, 1987 – the year I picked up on skateboarding. The Bones Brigade were in their prime and Guerrero was my favorite skateboarder. During that year my friends and I watched The Search For Animal Chin at least 100 times. His flaming dagger deck was one of my very first rides.

Flash forward to 2004 when I was reintroduced to Tommy Guerrero as a musician on this very site in a post by site founder Sean. Now, 12 years later Tommy is still at it with his new band BLKTOP PROJECT featuring Josh Lippi and fellow skaters Ray Barbee, Chuck Treece and Matt Rodriguez.

Recorded live over two days, their new album, Concrete Jungle is a loose, grooved-out, rocker of a record with a great jam session feel to it. Check the stream of “A New Line” below for a taste. It’s a real rump shaker.

Concrete Jungle is out today through Guerrero’s own Too Good records and available to buy from his Bandcamp page.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard

Those of you familiar with Australian psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard know that they are always pushing the musical envelope. On their 8th album in 4 years, Nonagon Infinity, they are at it again. This time they have created what they are describing a “never-ending album” – with each of the 9 tracks flowing into each other, including track 9 flowing back into track 1.

Putting the “never-ending album” claim to the test over the past weekend, I made Nonagon Infinity my soundtrack for around 15 miles or so of walking, and it is as advertised – seamless.

Nonagon Infinity is a damn fine album, potentially album of the year, packed wall to wall with scuzzy guitars and throbbing bass lines over the top of frenzied double drumming beats.

Nonagon Infinity is available now in all formats via ATO Records and King Gizzard’s Bandcamp page.

Newstalgia

Using cuts from the 1966 French spy movie Agent 505: Death Trap Beirut on his newest release, The Formula, Michigan producer/beat maker Newstalgia has created one of the coolest hip hop/beats albums I’ve heard in the past couple of years. If you’re a fan of Madlib and/or early 90’s Beastie Boy instrumentals, The Formula is the album for you.

Check out some of Newstalgia’s goodness on title track included below.

The Formula is available now via Producers I Know’s Bandcamp page. It’s definitely worth your time. Enjoy.

Woods

Brooklyn’s Woods are back with their outstanding 9th LP, City Sun Eater in the River of Light. Taking the best parts of almost every genre of music out there and adding it their already wonky, folk-psych sound, Woods have created a groove-driven (dare I call it “groove-psych”), psychedelic rock masterpiece.

Check out the head bobbing beat of “Can’t See At All” (below) for a mere sampling of how cool this album is.

City Sun Eater… is out now and available on whatever media suits your fancy from WOODSIST Records – I highly, highly recommend it.

Howard

Brooklyn-based quartet Howard released their debut album, Religion, at the beginning of 2015. For their follow up EP, Please Recycle, Howard has completely reworked songs from Religion (with no additional tracking or anything else, mind you) to create a fantastic departure from their debut. The results, Please Recycle is 5 songs of electronica gold, reminiscent of artists like Four Tet and Tycho.

Give “Plastic” (below) a spin, it’s a great example of the entire EP. Please Recycle is available now via Fashion People, I highly recommend it.

Polyon

Washington, DC trio Polyon unleash their brand of 90’s inspired shoegaze meets pummeling indie rock on their newest EP Blue.

Check out the fuzzy, heavy-as-hell title track below for a taste.

Blue is available now on cassette from Funny / Not Funny Records and digitally from Polyon’s Bandcamp page.

Waveless

Waveless is a three-piece post-punk band out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their layered, shoegazey, reverbed, noise-rock is hard to beat. Their newest 12″, Spirit Island, is out now through Deranged Records. Check out album opener, ‘My Apathy’ (below) for a taste.

Spirit Island is available to buy digitally or physically from Deranged Records, and is also available through Midheaven.

Radiation City

Portland-based Radiation City recently dropped their third LP and first with Polyvinyl Records. Synesthetica is a hook-driven, electro-pop gold mine – the deeper you dig into the album the more rich stuff you find. Check out one of many standout tracks “Milky White” (below) for a taste.

Synesthetica is out now and available in all formats from Polyvinyl.

Wahyas

Greensboro, NC duo Wahyas play a sinister style of raunchy, garage-psych that’s hard to top. Their own description, “Evil garage gospel like Johnny & June with less church”, pretty much sums it up.

They just co-released their 7″ single, Third Eye, with Shipwrecked Records and  Six Tonnes De Chair Records. You can get this on vinyl or digitally through Six Tonnes De Chair’s Bandcamp page. You can download this directly from Wahyas’ Bandcamp page as well. Stream this bad boy (below) and get your self a copy on wax before they are gone.

jinsang

California beat maker jinsang combines jazz cuts over chilled out beats to create some killer, smooth, grooved-out tracks. His latest release, solitude., is 26 tracks of pure groove. The more I listen to it the higher it jumps up my favorite releases of 2016 list.

His entire catalog is available to buy on his Bandcamp page for only a measly $7 bucks! Trust me that’s $7 bucks well spent my friends. Below are a few tracks from solitude. and a new one he just put up on his Soundcloud page. Check them out, then go get your hands on some of his music. Enjoy.
