Maston

Maston (Frank Maston) is a California-based multi-instrumentalist. He recently released his first proper album, Shadows on Trouble In Mind. Maston played all instruments on the album (except for the harp, played by Ana Caravelle).
I have been listening to, and enjoying this album for several weeks now, but have been struggling to find the right words to describe it. The best I can come up with this, a psychedelic, surf, pop rock album that sounds like it could have been recorded in the 60’s. Check out “Young Hearts” below, It’s damn good, and a great example of the entire album.

Jacco Gardner

Jacco Gardner is a multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire from Hoorn, Netherlands. His incredible debut LP, with Trouble In Mind, Cabinet of Curiosities, hit record stores today. Jacco’s talents shine on this record as he plays all the instruments on the album (including organs, mellotron, flutes, and harpsichords), except the drums, which were handled by Jos van Tol.

Clearly influenced by late 60’s psychedelic bands like The Zombies and The Left Banke, Gardner’s music is a magical ride back in time. Check out the sugar-sweet, harpsichord driven track “The Ballad of Little Jane” below. It’s Beatle-esque melodies and vocal delivery is so addicting, you’ll repeat the song at least 3 times. Also below, is a video of Gardner performing “The Ballad of Little Jane” live. Enjoy.

Estrogen Highs

I’m short. I’ve been short all of my life, so I’m pretty used to it. But, I would be lying if I said I’ve never dreamt of being taller. I’m not asking for anything extreme like 7 foot, just average, 6 foot would be perfectly acceptable. When I heard Estrogen Highs’ new single “I Wanna Be Tall”, the chorus really hit home with me. It simply states, “I wanna be tall like you”. It’s a great punk rock song that starts out slow with a warm glow of feedback and lonely guitar before it kicks into full assault of fuzzy guitar and pounding drums. Check it out below along with another track from their new album, Irrelevant Future, out now on Trouble In Mind.

Hollows

Hollows, a quintet (four ladies and one gentleman) out of Chicago, just released their second album Vulture with Trouble In Mind. Their musical style utilizes multiple vocal harmony layers that when mixed with jangly guitars and driving drum beats creates a killer garage pop groove. Trouble In Mind was kind enough to share a couple songs with us. Give them a try below then run out to your favorite local record store and buy this.

Mikal Cronin

I’ll be the first to admit that I judge the book by it’s cover. When I saw the album cover for Mikal Cronin’s self-titled debut, I knew I was going to like what I was about to hear. After listening to the two songs available on his bandcamp page, my judgement was correct, I was blown away. After some research i found that Mikal is a frequent collaborator with Ty Segall, they released an album together called Reverse Shark Attack back in 2009. Ty also guests on Mikal’s new album along with John Dwyer from Thee Oh Sees. The tracks included are an indie/garage/psych rock fans dream. Full of Beach Boys harmonies, start and stop melodies, scuzzy guitar tones, fuzzy vocals and a smoking flute solo, yes a flute solo. Do you need any other reasons to give these songs a try? Did you see the part about the flute solo?
