Antony and the Johnsons

One of the nice things about a new job (note to self: update bio page) is all the new music you get to hear through your new co-workers. This week, as part of New Music Tuesdays, Andrew brought in Antony and the Johnsons’ exquisite I Am a Bird Now. Antony has been tagged with the same “freak folk” moniker as his pal Devendra Banhart, though I’d call it the transexual blues and add that he sounds more like Nina Simone than Woody Guthrie.

  1. The album I Am A Bird Now is quite an awesome piece of music. Hope there’s someone really strikes you from the first listen. Great tunes throughout and ones I love playing on my radio show. If any UK people who have it can get Antonys Jools Holland performance online check it out it was excellent

  2. "Hope There's Someone" is the first song I've heard in a long time that made me truly pity the singer and want to buy him some Prozac.

  3. Hope There’s Someone is the only song that remains constantly on my mp3 player. I also adore the track featuring Rufus Wainwright which is more Rufus Wainwright than Antony.

  4. When I first listened to Antony and the Johnsons, it sort of disturbed me. It was so honest, I felt like I wasn't supposed to be listening to this…like it was someone's diary of personal fears. but I soon got over that, the music was too lovely .his voice haunts you.

  5. I just want to say WoW. Their album I am a bird now is so different and i cannot see myself going through a day without putting it on and reflecting my day. it makes me get away into another world were there are no problems. hahah

  6. If you want a perverse look into mainstream tastes, read the listener reviews of this lp on amazon.com. It a really love it or hate it proposition. but the people who hate it are so hateful!
I think it’s beautiful. I have ordered a copy and I can’t wait until it gets here.
